As a head coach and assistant Georgi Dermendzhiev faced 4 former European champions. The last of them was the great FC Liverpool who dramatically denied Ludogorets a well deserved point at Anfield. Before that match Georgi Dermendzhiev eliminated Steaua. As an assistant coach he was knocked out by Hamburger SV in 2007/2008 season. During the last European campaign Ludogorets beat twice PSV Eindhoven in the groups of UEFA Europa League.
A very interesting fact is that all head coaches assisted by Georgi Dermendzhiev in the European tournaments have become Bulgarian champions – Dimitar Dimitrov, Ferario Spasov, Stoycho Mladenov, Ljupko Petrović, Ivaylo Petev and Stoycho Stoev. And is it not the present head coach of Ludogorets the man behind the most of their successful performances? The facts speak for themselves – 31 of the said 62 European fixtures of Georgi Dermendzhiev as an assistant coach ended with victory for the Bulgarian side, 11 in a draw and 20 games were lost. The total count of Georgi Dermendzhiev’s European matches already reached 66 of which 32 wins, 12 draws and 22 defeats.
The 59-year-old Dermendzhiev is not a man who likes to give interviews and to be in the spotlights. Nonetheless, everyone who used to work with him is impressed with his professionalism. The man from Plovdiv is part of the Ludogorets project from the very beginning and many think he was the architect of Eagles successful performance. Since the formation of the present outfit, the club from Razgrad offers the same impressive display and fascinates football specialists. Dermendzhiev was the man who initiated the close collaboration between the first team and the club’s academy. Thanks to him only in Ludogorets the preparatory groups have two coaches which further their development. The head coach accomplished practical coaching training in Spain and gathered experience from the best football experts.
Since November 2015 Dermendzhiev came back to Ludogorets as a head coach. Soon after the team went to the top of the table.
Dermendzhiev won Champion of Bulgaria with FC Ludogorets in seasons 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17.
